Prereq's founders, two moms who'd watched their own kids piece together skincare routines from confusing store shelves and TikTok advice, had a real product point of view: teens and tweens needed skincare built for how they actually live, not adult products repackaged smaller. But most teen skincare brands make the same mistake — they get built in boardrooms, tested on adult focus groups, and end up sounding like they're trying too hard. Prereq needed a full brand foundation — positioning, voice, and message architecture — that could hold its own in an increasingly crowded Gen Alpha skincare market without ever sounding like it was talking down to the people it was actually for.
Every skincare brand assumes the customer's life happens at a bathroom sink. Teens don't live there.
They live in locker rooms, backpacks, between classes, mid-practice — nowhere near a sink half the time. A mirror, a counter, ten minutes, a multi-step routine: the category's whole design logic was built backward.
Rather than guess, we went directly to the source: interviews, surveys, and post-it note brainstorms with fifty real teens and preteens, hearing in their own words where their lives actually happen and what they needed skincare to do inside of it. The reframe wasn't about formulating gentler products — it was about admitting where teens actually are: on the move, not standing still in front of a mirror. As the brand would go on to put it themselves: most brands guess what you want. We just asked.
