The challenge
Netflix didn't need a brand built. It needed a voice it could deploy anywhere, fast. As the company transformed from streaming disruptor into the world's biggest original storyteller, the briefs came from every direction: cultural moments, original series launches, new market expansions, product screens, gift cards, internal programs, even the naming of a leadership retreat. Each one high-stakes, each one fast-turnaround, and each one needing to sound unmistakably Netflix without a playbook — because the playbook was still being written.
The insight
Entertainment brands talk about their content. Netflix works best when it talks about you: the watcher.
Watching isn't passive consumption; it's identity, mood, pride, and joy. That's the thread that let one voice stretch from a Pride parade float to a plan-selection screen without breaking: treat every viewer as an original, and celebrate the act of watching itself. Binge like you mean it.
What we created
- Brand platform and messaging architecture built around a single idea — We are all Originators — with a brand promise (Great Content + Customer in Control), three messaging pillars (Next Level Ideas, Experience, Content), and manifesto copy for each, laddering up to the See What's Next era.
- Cultural campaign copy for NYC Pride, the year marriage equality became law: Gold Sponsor ad concepts (Stream Loud. Watch Proud. / “Rainbow is the New Black”), parade float calls-to-action, real-time tweet responses, and the script and storyboard for the campaign recap film.
- Tribute advertising for the Paley Center's celebration of African Americans in television — copy that honored groundbreaking artists with restraint and awe.
- Original series launch concepting for F is for Family — key art concepts and full scripts, including the “By the Letters” concept that spells out the family one insult at a time before landing on “F is for… Family.”
- Growth and acquisition copy for the New Zealand market launch — a full value-proposition exploration spanning eight strategic territories, from the “Content High” dictionary-definition concept to “Never-Bored” syndrome.
- In-product UX copy for one of Netflix's most delicate member communications: the end of grandfathered Early Member pricing, turning a price increase into a thank-you.
- Naming and naming strategy across the company — the recommendation and rationale for Ribbon Ranch, Netflix's leadership retreat space; naming explorations for member-facing programs like the Super Recommenders (“The Bureau of Extraordinary Recommendations”) and the Ally Program; and the naming frameworks behind them.
- Experiential and swag copy with a fan following of its own — the 10 Billion Hours celebration tees, the SXSW “Binge Kit” (“My neck, my back, my Netflix and my snacks.”), and Marketing Hack Day identity concepts.
